We are so happy you're exploring adoption with the Ashtabula County APL! Our adoption process was established to help find the best possible, 'furever' fit for both the adopter and animal.

Due to current protocols for social distancing, an approved application and appointment are required prior to a meet and greet.

1) Apply for the Pet – the application is a relatively simple process asking for basic information of the variety you would be asked for elsewhere. If you currently have another pet, or have had one in the past two years, either bring your pet’s (s) veterinarian records or the contact information for your vet. Your veterinarian will be called to ensure that your new pet will receive the vet care that all animals deserve.

2) Schedule Your Appointment– get to know the pet’s personality and learn what the pet’s needs are. Please ask questions! We will do our best to help find the best possible match for your lifestyle, activity level and existing family members (both furry and human!)

3) Animal Meet and Greet – If you already have a dog, we do require a dog 'meet and greet' prior to adoption. This step helps us set up both your current and future pets for success. The dog meet and greet can be done as a second appointment after your initial meet and greet.

4) Decide –Take your time, pets are a long-term commitment. Remember, dogs may live 10-18 years depending on the breed and cats may live as long as 15-20 years. This is not a “for now” decision, this is a “for the life of the pet” decision. Please make the decision recognizing the needs of the pet which include a safe home environment, food and treats, regular veterinarian care, toys to play with and time for daily play and exercise. If you cannot make this commitment to the pet, please give someone else the opportunity to rehome. Almost all of our dogs and cats had a family once; we want to see them go to a family for life.

5) After Approval – your new pet may not yet be fixed. ALL pets will be spayed or neutered prior to being adopted. If your new pet is not yet altered, we will arrange a surgery date. In some cases, we will coordinate a foster-to-adopt contract where an animal can leave the shelter but will return for spay/neuter prior to formal adoption.
