Most cats that come into the ACAPL are surrendered as household pets by their owners, strays that have human bonds, or kittens that are able to be socialized. However, sometimes we receive cats through good Samaritans or other well-intentioned community members that have been trapped or taken from an existing outdoor cat living experience. These cats often have a hard time adapting to humans and are not socialized. Because these cats experience significant fear and stress in a caged environment, in some shelters they are humanely euthanized. However, at ACAPL we are working to find other ways to help these cats return to the community and thrive. In addition to working with partners from the Community Cat Coalition to return ear-tipped TNR cats to an existing cat colony, we have developed our 'Rodent Rangers' working cat program. If you have a barn, horse stable, greenhouse, warehouse, farm, or winery a Rodent Ranger may be for you!
ACAPL provides a fully vaccinated (including rabies) and vet-checked cat, that will be spayed or neutered prior to rehoming. We ask just ask that you provide a safe shelter in barn or stable, daily food, water and a litter box. We also ask that you provide a secure space (without outdoor access) for at least two weeks for your feline friends to acclimate to their new surroundings. Once comfortable, our Rodent Rangers often help control pests in their new homes, reducing the need for pesticides, traps, and other critter control methods.
And what could be better than one Rodent Ranger--how about a pair? Many cats prefer to live with other feline counterparts--and it helps to reduce stress during the rehoming process. To encourage multi-cat adoption, we reduce the adoption fee of additional Rodent Rangers by half. Once out of the shelter some of our Rodent Rangers warm up to their human counterparts when given time and space, some may want to be on their own, and others might enjoy the company of other animal companions.
